The 'Dutch Design' movement really put the Netherlands on the global map in the 1990s, and so did Dutch Design lighting. Many different design lamps have been designed by Dutch designers throughout Dutch history. One of these designers is Jan Hoogervorst. He was one of the greatest designers during the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Every year, Hoogervorst designed the so-called Annual Collections for ANVIA. These collections were not only noticed in the Netherlands, ANVIA also developed international allure. Jan Hoogervorst was inspired and influenced by progressive Italian lighting companies such as Arredoluce, Stilnovo and Arteluce but also by the De Stijl art movement. This art movement was also the inspiration for the Dutch Design movement.
Dutch design lighting: how did the Dutch Design movement actually originate?
The term Dutch Design was put on the map by the media in the 1990s. The Dutch platform Droog scored high marks at an international furniture fair in Milan in 1993, leading journalists to talk about a new wave of Dutch Design. Minimalist, experimental and innovative are some of the characteristics of the designs within the movement. As mentioned earlier, art movement De Stijl is an important source of inspiration for this movement and the term became truly world famous during the 1990s. But the movement goes back much further in time, to just after World War II. Despite the fact that Dutch Design lighting only really made its rise in the 1990s, ANVIA with Jan Hoogervorst's lighting designs and international allure fits right in! Since they are inspired by the De Stijl art movement. His designs are characterized by minimalism, purity and functionality, with a great sense of proportion but also strongly Calvinistic.
